Infrared Remote Sensor Module - 5mm

The infrared counting sensor module is used to count or detect objects that move through the U-shaped (5MM) detector arms.

The module has an IR transmitter and receiver pair that face each other in a U-shaped housing. An object moving through these arms breaks the IR beam.

These modules are usually used to count something as it passes through the arms. This could be gear teeth on a wheel if it is counting revolutions or RPM, or something like pellets falling through a chute if it is part of a feeder for a pellet stove or rabbit. Another use is as an optical limit switch or to detect when something is open or closed as an object moves in or out of the beam.

The sensor output is normally LOW and the red LED on the module will normally be on. If the IR beam between the arms is interrupted, the output becomes HIGH and the LED turns off.

Module connections
The module has a 3-pin header for making connections.

1 x 3 header

GND – Ground
OUT – Output, normally LOW. Becomes HIGH when the IR beam is interrupted
VCC – 3.3 – 5V
The module has two holes for mounting.

Although this module is functionally similar to cheaper Light Block Sensor Modules, the Infrared Counting Sensor Module has much higher and wider detector arms and an LM393 comparator circuit, making it more robust and flexible in the applications in which it can be used.
